UAE VAT on Retail Receipts - What Shops Need to Know

VAT-inclusive shelf prices, tax invoices vs simplified tax invoices, TRN, returns and e-invoicing for retail shops in the UAE. General information.

Markets Desk · · updated

Key takeaways

  • The standard UAE VAT rate is 5 percent, and prices shown to consumers are expected to include it.
  • Retail sales are usually covered by a simplified tax invoice; full tax invoices carry more detail and are needed in other cases.
  • Returns should be recorded as returns against the original sale so your VAT figures follow the refund.
  • E-invoicing is being phased in; check the Federal Tax Authority's current timetable before you plan system changes.

Value Added Tax changed how every UAE shop prices, prints and reports, and it keeps evolving. This guide covers what a retail shop needs on its receipts and in its till: VAT-inclusive pricing, the difference between a tax invoice and a simplified tax invoice, your TRN, returns, tourist refunds and the move to e-invoicing.

General information, not tax advice. VAT rules change and depend on your business. Check the Federal Tax Authority (UAE Federal Tax Authority — VAT) or speak to a registered tax agent before acting on anything here.

What VAT rate applies to retail sales in the UAE?

The standard VAT rate in the UAE is 5 percent, in place since VAT was introduced on 1 January 2018 according to the Federal Tax Authority. Most goods sold in a general retail, gift or electronics shop are standard-rated. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt, but those rarely apply to everyday retail items.

For a shop selling phones, accessories, gifts or household goods, the practical rule is simple: almost everything on your shelves carries 5 percent VAT. Your system should store each product with the right tax rate so you never have to think about it at the counter.

Does my shop need to register for VAT?

Registration depends on your taxable turnover. The FTA sets a mandatory registration threshold and a lower voluntary one; check the current figures on the FTA website, because thresholds and rules are set by the authority, not by your software. Once registered, you charge VAT, issue compliant invoices and file returns.

Should my shelf prices include VAT?

Yes. Prices shown to consumers in the UAE are expected to include VAT, so the price on the shelf label, the online store and the receipt total should be the same number. Set products up with tax-inclusive selling prices, and the system calculates the VAT portion contained in each sale for the receipt and your reports.

This is the biggest difference from shops in the US, where sales tax is added at the till. A UAE customer who sees a price on a shelf expects to pay exactly that.

How is the VAT portion worked out from an inclusive price?

Divide the inclusive price by 1.05 to get the price before VAT; the difference is the VAT. In an example with a shelf price of 105, the price before VAT is 100 and the VAT is 5. Your POS does this on every line, and rounding is handled consistently.

What is the difference between a tax invoice and a simplified tax invoice?

A tax invoice is the full document, with supplier and recipient details and a VAT breakdown. A simplified tax invoice carries fewer details and is generally permitted for retail-type sales, such as to consumers. Which one you must issue depends on the sale; the FTA publishes the current rules.

Typical contents, in general terms:

Most walk-in sales in a shop are covered by the simplified version. Business customers who are VAT-registered and want to recover VAT will ask for a full tax invoice with their own TRN. Your system should be able to print both layouts and let the cashier choose.

Can my receipt be in Arabic and English?

Yes. Bilingual receipts are common in the UAE and welcome by customers. Set up an invoice layout that shows labels in both languages, and keep amounts in AED.

What is a TRN and where does it go?

A TRN, or Tax Registration Number, is the number the FTA issues to a VAT-registered business. It appears on your tax invoices, simplified tax invoices and credit notes, so customers and auditors can identify the registered supplier. Store it once in your business settings so every invoice prints it automatically.

How do I handle refunds and returns with VAT?

Record every refund as a return against the original sale. That reverses the VAT along with the price, keeps your VAT report aligned with what you actually kept, and gives you a document to hand the customer. Avoid refunding through manual discounts or cash taken from the drawer.

  1. Find the original sale from the receipt or customer record.
  2. Select the items being returned and the quantity.
  3. Record the return; the system reverses the sale amount and its VAT.
  4. Refund using the original payment method where possible.
  5. Hand the customer the return document.

For a business customer who received a full tax invoice, the return document should carry the details they need to adjust their own VAT; ask your tax agent what your documents must show.

Can tourists claim VAT back from my shop?

The UAE runs a VAT refund scheme for tourists that applies to eligible purchases at participating retailers, operated through a provider appointed by the FTA (Planet operates the scheme). A shop has to register with the scheme and use the provider’s process at the till. Ask the provider directly about current eligibility and requirements.

What is happening with e-invoicing in the UAE?

The UAE is introducing electronic invoicing in phases, starting with business-to-business transactions, with the FTA and the Ministry of Finance publishing timelines and requirements. Dates and scope have been announced in stages, so check the official sources for the version in force before you plan any changes to your systems.

For most small shops selling to consumers, the immediate priority remains the basics: correct VAT rates, inclusive pricing, compliant receipts and clean records. We’ll update this article when the phases that affect retail shops are confirmed.

How RetailPOS Studio handles it

RetailPOS Studio stores tax rates and tax groups per product, supports tax-inclusive selling prices so shelf, online store and receipt agree, prints your TRN and bilingual Arabic and English invoice layouts, and records returns against the original sale so VAT reverses with the refund. We do not claim UAE e-invoicing certification; ask on your demo about your situation. Questions on this topic

01Should prices in a UAE shop include VAT?Cost & billing
Yes. Prices displayed to consumers in the UAE are expected to include VAT, so the shelf price is the price the customer pays. Set your products up with tax-inclusive prices and let the system work out the VAT portion on each receipt.
02What is the difference between a tax invoice and a simplified tax invoice?Day to day
A full tax invoice carries the details of both supplier and recipient, including the recipient's TRN where relevant, and a breakdown of VAT. A simplified tax invoice carries fewer details and is generally allowed for retail-style supplies. Check the FTA's current rules for which applies to your sales.
03What is a TRN and does it go on my receipts?Day to day
A TRN is the Tax Registration Number the Federal Tax Authority issues to VAT-registered businesses. If you are registered, your TRN appears on your tax invoices and simplified tax invoices.
04How do I handle VAT on a customer refund?Cost & billing
Record the refund as a return against the original sale rather than as a manual discount or cash payout. That way the VAT on the refund is reversed in your reports and matches the paperwork you issue.
05Can tourists get VAT back on purchases from my shop?Day to day
The UAE runs a tourist VAT refund scheme for eligible purchases at participating retailers, operated through an appointed provider. Joining involves registering with the scheme and its provider; ask the provider for current requirements.
