For gift shops

A gift shop POS that sells through every season

RetailPOS Studio is a gift shop POS for shops whose year is shaped by occasions: holidays, Eid, Lunar New Year, Valentine's Day and Mother's Day. Buy ahead with purchase orders, label handmade pieces that arrive without barcodes, reward occasion buyers with points so they come back, and let your online store show the gifts you have in stock tonight.

The trade, honestly

What makes gift retail hard

  1. 1

    Everything happens at once

A few weeks around each holiday carry much of the year's sales. If a best seller runs out in week one, the season is gone.

  2. 2

    Unbarcoded, one-off pieces

Handmade candles, ceramics and local crafts arrive with no barcode and small quantities, so they're easy to misprice and lose track of.

  3. 3

    Leftover seasonal stock

After the season, money sits on the shelf in decorations nobody will buy for eleven months.

  4. 4

    Occasional customers

Most gift buyers visit a few times a year. Without a reason to return, they buy the next gift elsewhere.

A week in the shop

A season in a typical gift shop

Six weeks before the holidays, the owner opens last year's sales for the same weeks, filtered by category. Candles and personalized ornaments sold out early; novelty mugs didn't. Purchase orders go to two importers and three local makers, each with a due date, and the open orders list shows what's still to arrive as the weeks go by.

Deliveries come in pieces. Each is received against its order, and handmade items get labels with just a barcode and price for the base, so nothing ugly sits on the front. Product photos added in the back office appear in the online store automatically, and customers start reserving items by message before they arrive.

In the rush, cashiers attach customers by phone number and points add up. In January, the stock report shows what's left of the seasonal category at cost, a category discount clears it, and the customer list shows who bought during the holidays — the same people who will be back for Valentine's Day with points to spend.

Gift shops: common questions

01Can I print gift receipts?Day to day
You can create an invoice layout without prices and use it as a gift receipt, while the normal invoice stays on file for returns.
02How do I handle handmade items with no barcode?Day to day
Give each one a SKU, let the system generate a barcode, and print a small label for the base or tag. One-off pieces can have a quantity of one.
03Can I sell gift cards?Day to day
Gift cards can be run through a custom payment method and tracked on the customer record. Ask on your demo how you'd like them set up for your shop.
04Can I see which seasonal items didn't sell?Day to day
Yes. The stock report filtered to your seasonal category shows quantity and value left, and trending products show what did sell, so next year's order is based on fact.
05Can I take orders for personalized gifts?Day to day
Yes. Many shops record personalization as a job with the text and collection date, or as a sale with a note and a deposit, and invoice the balance on pickup.
06Will tourists be able to pay by card?Cost & billing
Card payments work with your card processor. Prices can be shown tax-inclusive where that is the rule, as in the UAE.
07Can I show my shop's products online without building a website?Day to day
Yes. Your online store is generated from your catalogue, with photos, prices and stock. If you want a designed site with your own pages, see the managed website option.
08What does it cost?Cost & billing
Most single gift shops start on Counter at $35 per month and move to Stockroom when they want purchase orders, after a 21-day free trial.
